By land, sea and air, that's where Sheriff Benny Napoleon and Detroit Police Chief James Craig say their joint effort to pool resources will have an even greater impact on public safety.  The law enforcement leaders held a press conference in December to announce about a dozen DPD officers were being deputized to work on WCS marine unit boats to expand DPD's jurisdiction in marine incidents and also add manpower to assist the WCSO Marine Unit which is feeling the effects of a department-wide personnel shortage.  Accordingly, WC deputies will have access to DPD helicopters for investigative and law enforcement purposes.  The partnership is the latest in a string of collaborations between the WCSO and DPD to increase public safety.

Sheriff Benny N. Napoleon recently honored dozens of officers and command staff for their exceptional achievement, heroism and general commitment to the law enforcement profession and the community they serve. The Salute to Service event was co-sponsored by Local 3317 and the WCDSA/POAM and held at Wayne County Community College District Downriver Campus in Taylor. In addition to naming Officers and Supervisors of the year for Courts, Operations and Jail Divisions I, II and III, honorees also received Sheriff's Citations, Commendations, Citations for Lifesaving and Valor and also Perfect Attendance. In fact, there were more than 50 individuals honored for perfect attendance. But no honor stood out so valiantly as the selfless dedication of Minister Almeta Bastisties who has volunteered her services as a Chaplain for 53 years to the jails! Not ony has she continued to travel to the jails several days a week by bus, she's done so while raising a family of five boys, four girls, an adopted boy and girl and 67 grandchildren. The event was attended by family, friends and various members of law enforcement, the judiciary and county commission, It was a perfect opportunity to highlight the true dedication of many of the agency's everyday heros. Congratulations to everyone who was recognized.
